A Short in the Dark

Pre-production and planning is well under way for our next project currently entitled Harvest. You may have seen mention of Harvest amongst are other blogs but essentially it is our hope and ambition that Harvest will be Pallas Pictures’ first feature film and that in time we will secure funding to make it possible.

Prior to making the feature though we are currently in the process of planning for a Harvest short. A short film that we hope will wet the appetite of any potential backers and portray to potential viewers the tone and feel of what the final feature will look like, while at the same time giving a little taster of what the film will be about.

Using a short film as a kind of sample of ‘what might be’ to secure budget for a feature film is common place in the film industry. There are numerous tales of iconic films being funded because someone somewhere once saw an earlier short version of it and were then willing to stump up the cash. And we’re hoping for something of the same. One film which did exactly this and which we have been using as a great starting reference is the brilliant and intensely creepy short Mama. It was on seeing this short that visionary director Guillermo Del Toro decided he was happy to help fund and produce the horror feature of the same name

If you haven’t seen the Mama short then its worth the watch. In three minutes of film the creators manage to build incredible tension before whacking the viewer with a double whammy of fright. It’s our hope that in a similar amount of time we will create a short that has the potential to convey exactly what Harvest will be about and what any funder, backer, or viewer can expect to see in the final feature.
